Aki's Shrine sits very close to the House of Noh. The hill that Noh sits upon is the highest point next to the valley below. The sound of running water is very warm to the listener's ears, as streams trickle down the side of the mountain. The ringing of a wind chime is clear, and it makes a soft 'ting' sound every time a breeze blows past. In Aki's Shrine, a long feather quill and india ink sits next to parchment. On this parchment, Aki's caretaker should record their Kabuki's most important memories.

Important Events and Notices!:

August 14, 2004: Have you noticed? Aki has been acting very shyly lately. Introduce her to the new toddler, and she might just break out of that awkward spell. Also, she's gotten crafty- introduce her to the art of Origami, too, and see what beautiful paper creations she comes up with! (Hint: This will help her as the first part of the quest for her to become a child!)

She is a quiet girl, thoughtful and attentive to the world about her. Of course, because of her muse autumn is the time when she shines the most, where she is the most vivacious. When the leaves around arent wearing their autumn colours she surrounds herself in colours that reflect autumn, reds, browns, yellows and oranges. Her favourite thing to do is walk through piles of fallen leaves, listening to the sshh, sshh, crunch and crinkle sound that they make.

Aki's shrine is gotten to by following a path of small rounded stones. Along the way tiny red candles are dotted, sitting in small glass sconces. When you get to the shrine you find a small patch of circular ground that has been cleared, with heavy pitted stones along the edge. The stones are flecked with what looks like crystals, they sparkle when the light hits them. Her shrine is actually a living one, two small hedges have been encouraged to grow up and their branches have been interwoven to create a canopy, the stones are ringed around the outside of the plants. They are especially chosen for the brilliance of the hues that their leaves take on during the autumnal months. Two small covered lanterns sit by the shrine, and under the canopy are several cunningly crafted cushions. They have been sewn to look like leaves, coloured thread picked out on them to represent the leaf-like veins. The cloth they are made of is felt-like. They are only in there during spring, summer and winter - they are replaced with their real counterparts once she is able to gather them.

There is a new addition to Aki's shrine - a book bound in red velvet, the pages are stiff board with plastic sleeving in which are a collection of images of autumn.

The Kabuki are a quiet, private sect of people who live in a large home in Japan. They are a magical people, but not in the traditional sense. Their magic comes from their worship of muses. The Kabuki do not spend all of their time inside the house of Noh, but they do enjoy to spend most of their time in the home. Outside there are beautiful water gardens, and trickling waterfalls (as the house is positioned on top of a large hill). Each Kabuki has a small shrine to their muse, where they record their daily or weekly events. Whatever happens to a Kabuki, they are sure to record at least the most important.

Inside the house, the Kabuki all share a few gathering rooms, and all have their separate living spaces. Kabuki are not overly materialistic, as they learn to live a simple life, but they enjoy both giving and receiving presents, especially if these gifts are somehow in relation to their muse.

<i>8th July</i>:

Given Guardianship of a solemn little baby girl. She is a Kabuki, her life is governed by a Muse - Autumn. I have named her Aki which I thought to be most fitting.

Met other Guardians and their Kabuki; Noir, Chao and Lilith, Merewen and Kokata.

Aki's first two teeth have poked through on her upper gum.

<i>9th July 2004</i>

Sayuri walked carefully down the hill, her geta making small noises on the stone path, the bottom of her kimono sweeping the ground behind her. Aki lay in her arms, gurgling softly, the autumn hued kimono fabric wrapped about her as a blanket moved as she kicked her legs under it. She finally stood before the shrine, the candles needed lighting which she did after kneeling down before it. The hedge canopy was in full leaf, the leaves were a verdant green colour and Aki pouted a little to see them.
<i>'I know,'</i> soothed Sayuri.
<i>'But it is not yet autumn.'</i>
Sayuri placed Aki down gently on the ground, the little girls hand grasped up to the sky and Sayuri pulled out one of the leaf shaped embroidered cushions for Aki to play with. Aki grabbed it with a little noise, blowing a spit bubble then jamming it in her mouth. Sayuri smiled, pulling out the parchment that was weighted down inside, taking up the quill and opening the well of indian ink. She filled the nib, then carefully started to write, the scritch-scritch sound carried along the wind.

Its has been a long while since I felt the urge to don kimono, obi and geta but I felt that the surroundings demanded it. This is the place after all where Aki must dwell - the strange little girl child baby that I have been given Guardianship of. She is a Kabuki - her life is governed by a particular muse - that of Autumn. Its strange to think that a season can be called a 'muse' , but I think that it is probably true. It influences and inspires much, from music, to painting and even fashion. And now it influences this child. How much of an influence is hard to tell but even now she has preferences that are definately autumnal in nature. She adores rich colours, reds, oranges, yellows and earthy browns. She dislikes grass, anything verdant because it is too green. She wont sleep in anything but the cloth she was wrapped in when she came to me.

Aki and I have yet to meet the other inhabitants of the House of Noh - there are 3 other's of her age and one around teen age. Hopefully they shall all meet soon.

Sayuri waved the parchment slightly to dry the ink before rolling it up once more, and tucking it back in the shrine along with the quill and closed ink well. She picked Aki up and wended her way back up the hill, towards the Noh house once more.

<i>13th July 2004</i>

Sayuri knelt with Aki on her lap. She was kneeling before a low table, the trains of her kimono falling behind her. She crossed her feet under her, and looked at Aki, who waved a hand at her from under the autumnal covered cloth. She stroked the little girl's hair, tickling her under her chin. Aki smiled, then giggled.
<i>'Food time first, little one,'</i> she pulled a bowl of miso soup towards herself, shifting slightly on the tatami mat. She carefully spooned soup into Aki's mouth, occasionally stopping to wipe Aki's chin.
<i>'Messy eater,'</i> she chuckled. Aki seemed to gurgle in agreement. She put the spoon in the bowl, then gracefully stood, shuffling across the mats. Aki wiggled in her arms.
<i>'Okay, okay. We are going to the shrine now.'</i> she slid the shuttered door across, leaving the room and then the House, stopping before she left to put on her geta. Down the hill she walked with Aki, turning off along the stony path towards Aki's specific shrine. She approached it, kneeling again and showing Aki the shrine.
<i>'See? Everything is still here and okay.'</i> She lay Aki down, making sure to rest her head on the folded ends of the kimono cloth. Sayuri picked up the quill and parchment from in the shrine, unrolling it and uncapping the indian ink well before writing another entry;

Things continue must as they have done. Aki continues to be a bright, alert baby but she is sometimes worryingly quiet. She cries very little. She does try to speak - usually when things are peaceful or if she is happy and content. She gurgles, making sounds that all almost as if she is trying to carry on a conversation with me. I have still yet to meet any other guardians or the Kabuki that they are looking after. I think somehow that I must sleep at different times to them but I hope very much that Aki will be able to meet the others like her. I do not want her growing up a lonely child.
Aki is awaiting autumn I think. The lush green ness of summer still seems to frustrate her. I did however manage to find some kimono's to decorate her room, I hung them on rods and put them on the walls. She finds them fascinating, touching the soft cloth and tracing the patterns with a finger when I showed them to her. But I believe that she will become more lively when the leaves begin to turn.

Sayuri put the writing materials back in the shrine, picking Aki up and walking back to the Noh house.

<i>15th July 2004</i>

Sayuri knelt by Aki's shrine. This morning she had opted to leave the little girl in her room in the Noh house for Aki had a slight fever and had been up all night crying. Now of course she had gone to sleep and Sayuri had sleepily made her way up her to check on the shrine, to light the candles and write an entry on the parchment. The slight breeze touched Sayuri's face and she tilted her head towards it, feeling it wake her senses a little more. She always felt a little befuddle when sleep deprived and walking down the hill in her geta had never seemed more troublesome then today. The parchment crinkled as she unrolled it and then with a scritch-scritch noise as the quill's nib slid over the textured surface she wrote;

Aki had been in good health until last night. She cried constantly and her cheeks were hot and she seemed feverish. I'm not sure if she is teething but it would seem as good a reason as any. She hasnt been ill in any other way. A cool, dampened washcloth on her head seemed to help, and she fell into sleep in the early hours of the morning. Of course I got no sleep whatsoever during all this and I was overtired by the time Aki finally dropped off so I headed out to write in this.
I have begun to read to Aki from novels - she probably doesnt understand the words but listens anyway, especially when I speak in a soft, musical tone of voice. I am currently reading to her the story of the 47 Ronin - I have decided to start with Japanese classics so that she will have a classical education right from the start. I will eventually teach her how to play the shamisen when she is old enough and some of the dance forms. I feel that she would appreciate this sort of thing.
I have also started feeing Aki on some soft foods - rice mainly and pureed vegetables. Miso soup is easy for her to digest and she will progress to more solid foods as she grows older. Now I must go...sleep is finally prodding me and it would not do to fall asleep out side.

<i>16th July 2004</i>

Sayuri was knelt in front of Aki's shrine. Aki was once more asleep in the Noh house, a cold wash cloth clutched in her hands that she had been chewing on. Sayuri had found the tip of a tooth protruding from Aki's gums - she was indeed teething and it was obviously painful. The parchment unrolled she began to write.

Aki is definately teething. I found the tiniest protruding tooth tip when she was sucking on one of my fingers the other day. The poor little girl seems in alot of pain, but soaking a wash cloth in cold water and letting her chew on it helps. She continues much in the same way apart from this. She has grown a little I think, she is bright, yet quiet and has yet to form any sort of recognisable words. She does like our 'story' time - I am reading her a page or two when she is awake. There is little else to write about for now - I think its certain to say that as the seasons turn she will show more of her self.

She put the parchment, ink and quill back before heading up the hill. Entering the house she noticed some doors had opened, she could hear sounds of other people moving about and talking and she slid open the shuttered door to her room to find Aki awake and wiggling about.
<i>'Lets go see some people,' </i> said Sayuri, bending and gathering her into her arms before leaving the room.

Chao breaks off her train of thought at the soft sounds of others entering and looks up from the book she has placed on one side of her lap, balanced on her dark jeans. A now slightly more awake than usual Lilith lay in it and peerd over the dark cloth at the others.
Chao blinked then smiled and waved lightly, "hello there." She would have gotten up so she could introduce herself a little better but she doubted Lilith would be for that.

( No problem, Merewen heart I hope everything has gotten back to normal! )

Noir: *With a very big smile, she picks up Taka and waves his paw at Lilith, winking. But, out of the corner of her eye, she sees a glimpse of Kokata, who can now stand up on her own accord. The toddler has a fan, probably picked up somewhere within the house, it is made of black silk with a delicate bamboo pattern on it. The toddler seems to be very attached to the trinket.*

'What's her name?' she asked, pulling away at the cloth covering Aki's head.
'This is Aki.'

Merewen gasped and dropped the bags of toys, staring at her daughter with such love in her eyes. "You grew sweetheart!" She squealed, picking her up in her arms and returning to the main area slowly. Stunned. "Kokata grew," She gasped, and then thought to put her back down on the floor gently.

Lilith giggles quietly at Noir and Taka and stretches out her small arms towards Taka, wanting to see the cat but looking at Noir as if asking permission to see her ever present companion.

*Noir almost stood up, cradling Taka in her arms, but she thought it would be better to let Kokata and Merewen get better aquainted. She had never seen a Kabuki baby grow up into a toddler, and was surprised to see that Kokata had found something to cling to, so early on in her life.

Noir patted Taka on the head, who looked very curiously at the child (Lilith).*

Aki waved a chubby fist at the toddler Kabuki that had emerged, blowing a spit bubble and talking to her in her own baby way. Sayuri chuckled

Merewen
Kokata toddled around happily, clinging to her fan. Merewen smiled, but she tilted her head at the fan.. "Wonder where you got that darling, but it's good that you found it. You'll need it when I teach you how to dance." Kokata looked back at Merewen as if knowing she was talking to her although she was silent.

"Her name's Lilith," Chao said fondly, patting her daughter's head and watching as the young girl glanced to Aki and waved then went back to reaching towards Taka causing Chao to giggle, "and my name's Chao, what's your name?" she asked then started slightly as she heard the toys drop to the floor then smiled at Merewen as she brought in Kokata, who Lilith waved to as well.
"She's beautiful!" Chao said cheerfully.

Merewen
Merewen and Kokata waved to everyone and Merewen moved over to take Kokata's hand. "I'm going to take her to her shrine." She said softly and headed towards the doors of the House.

Chao and Lilith waved back to the exiting Merewen and Kokata before Chao turned back to Sayuri and Lilith settled for looking curiously from Aki to Taka and back again, though it was through slightly tired half-lidded eyes, as if the young Kabuki had just remembered that she'd been awake for most of the night before.

Aki squalled unhappily as Kokata left with Merewen. Sayuri looked surprised then suddenly realised.
'Oh I know she had on colours you like but she cant stay just for you to look at her.' She turned to Chao.
'She just loves autumnal colours.' she said with a weary smile.

Chao cocked her head at Aki, "is Autum her muse then?" The tired expression of her daughter caught her eye and she gave Lilith a look, "just remembered you little decision that we should be awake from 1AM until sunrise, eh?"
Lilith looked back up to her with an expression of complete innocence causing Chao to sigh and look to Sayuri with a tired expression on her own face. "Lilith's muse if the Night Sky and I swear she's trying to adjust our sleep schedual so that we can make the most of the time it's present."

Sayuri nodded.
'Yes and she is sad and I think annoyed that its summer still. She gives the green leaves funny looks.' she smiled.
'I can imagine it would be tricky - a Kabuki baby that loves to look at the night sky when you want to sleep.' she chuckled.

"It's like getting a wake up call at midnight most of the time. I'll go to sleep thinking she'll just sleep through the night but if I'm not awake when she wakes up she starts crying. Then I wake up and rush over and she just smiles like 'ha! now you're up so you have to take me outside!'" she sighed, then chuckled, "my caculating little child. Oh, and I know what you mean about the looks. She's glaring at the sunrise now that she's figured out that when the sun rises the night sky had to dissapear."

Aki wiggled her feet, kicking the blanket around and gurgling as if to agree. Sayuri laughed, stroking Aki's cheek.
'I need to find some plants that have reddish or orange hues to their leaves all year round or Aki might start pulling the grass out or something. She already wont let me sit her on it.'

"She won't let you sit her on the grass? Wow. When I was first told what Lilith's muse would be I planted some night blooming flowers by her shrine. I'm happy I did. I have a bizaree feeling that when she gets old enough to tend for them she might not water day blooming ones..."

Sayuri nodded.
'Yup - its too green - she really hates it. I will have to go flower shopping - I think that would be the easiest way round it. Im hoping she will be entranced by the petals and not notice the green stems!' she chuckled, shifting Aki.
'Has Lilith teethed yet? Aki has just started.'

Chao chuckled, "I bet she'll love the petals too much to be bothered by the stems," at the mention of teething she shuddered, "gods, she started last night. Why must babies do this?"

'Its not their fault really - would be nice if they were born with teeth but im sure there is a good reason why not. It must hurt though.' Sayuri let Aki grab a finger and stuff it in her mouth.
'A cold wash cloth works wonders though.'

As if taking Aki as an example Lilith grabbed at Chao's long shirt sleeve and stuffed it into her mouth, Chao blinked at her then looked back to Sayuri with a small smile, "a cold cloth huh? Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'd imagin it must hurt a ton when their teeth come in, I don't even remember teething but I bet that's for the best." She stroked Lilith's hair with her other hand a bit.

Sayuri chuckled, laughing behind a hand.
'I think if we remembered everything it would be embarrassing! Who wants to remember nappy wearing or burping up?' she smiled.

Suddenly Lilith yawned and poked Chao. "Seems Lilith wants to sleep, she stood, "bye Aki bye... um, I didn't catch your name?" (pretend Chao gets it, I really need to go x.x)) "C-ya Sayuri, bye Aki!" Lilith waved over her shoulder as the two left the room.

Sayuri smiled, waving one of Aki's hands at them and standing herself, carrying Aki and padding quietly to their own room.

Sayuri hooked a finger through the handle of the lantern, shifting Aki so that she was resting on her hip. She wandered along the path, the sun sinking far in the distance, casting its dying light and lighting the clouds with a deep red hue. Aki watched fascinated, her eyes wide at this display in her favourite colour. The lantern-light danced in front of them as Sayuri walked, weaving a careful path down the hill towards Aki's shrine. The day had been a sultry one; Sayuri and Aki had slept the daylight hours away in the Noh house - when they werent asleep Sayuri had played her shamisen for Aki or simply fanned Aki and herself in a languid motion. Now, as night took hold and the warmth slowly slipped away, Sayuri took Aki down to her shrine. When they got there Sayuri lit the candles once more, the flickering of the flame's casting dappled light over them both. Aki rolled around on the train of Sayuri's kimono, jamming an embroidered leaf cushion in her mouth when Sayuri gave it to her. Sayuri pulled out the rolled-up parchment, flourishing quill with ink dipped nib and then writing;

Yesterday Aki and myself got to see some of the other inhabitants of the Noh house; Noir, the eldest Kabuki, Chao and Lilith her Kabuki charge, Merewen and Kokata likewise. Kokata had recently grown into a charming toddler, who was dressed beautifully but in colours that Aki likes! She protested a little when Merewen had to leave with Kokata - I'm sure she thought her to be a moving autumn landscape or some such.
After Merewen left, Chao and I got to talking about our respective Kabuki children. I told her about Aki's intolerance for anything verdant and green and she told me that Lilith wanted to get up at midnight to sky-gaze; watching the stars. Apparently Lilith is also teething and I gave Chao a little tip about cold washcloths. I hope very much that once they are both toddlers they can meet again and play together properly. Its a little tricky when they are both babies.
I purchased a red velvet bound photo album yesterday. Inside are pictures of autumn scenes, leaves and even flowers in those sort of colours. Aki loves looking at it, placing her chubby hands on the pictures as if she is trying to touch the leaves. I'm storing it in her shrine - we visit everyday so she can look at it everyday.
I've noticed that some of the trees are beginning to turn even this early on - autumn seems to be right round the corner. Aki will be very pleased. We will take walks through the wooded areas, collecting acorn cups, and conkers later in the year.

The parchment was put away as were the writing implements. Aki was picked back up, Sayuri bending to scoop the lantern up once more and they wend their way, a tiny beacon amongst the dark that had crept up whilst Sayuri was writing.
