Yarr! Amazing entries, guys.

FLATSALE OVAR!!!!

('cept for those people who have ALREADY PMed me with their incomplete entries. domokun )

Judging will take... a while, since we'll have to wait for several select peoples. In fact, it will probably take one or two days. o.o Patience is a virtue, folks!

Wonderful entries, everyone! We (I think I can speak for both of us, now) both VERY MUCH enjoyed reading them. Thank you for putting the time and effort into (entertaining us?) this flatsale! heart

How winners will be chosen:
Aris and I (and possibly an outsider - Someone I know IRL, who doesn't visit Gaia Online. She doesn't know anyone, so her decisions will be completely objective.) will mutually decide on the winners - The author of the best entry will get the first choice among the characters. The author of the follow up will get the second choice. The author of the next best choice... and so on. Until all of the characters have been 'distributed'.

Quick FAQ:
1. Oooh, one question. Is there an entry fee or something? xD

Nupe! Effort is enough of an entry fee......... Granted, if you win, you'll have to pay 10k for the pet. But for an entry, no fee. :3

2. Is Merrand someone's dear character? Or is she just for the FS?
I was planning on giving her to a friend after this flat sale, but seeing how many people made her die..... I think I'll just leave her a hanging character created specifically for the flat sale. sweatdrop

3. Do we have to continue from where you left off? Or can we like... start a story ourselves, just base it on the prompt? 'Cause I can't work off someone else's writing. ;;
So long as its got something to do with the prompt, it's fine. :3

4. I don't suppose we can edit our entries? sweatdrop
Sure you can! You have till Tuesday to send in your final entry.

5. If we don't finish by Tuesday, is it okay to send in something unfinished? @_@
XD Yes, yes, and yes again. Although if it's not finished, you can request an extension, which will be granted to anyone who has an unfinished response to the prompt.

6. If we win the RP contest, is the character we get the one we made up? Or is it one you already have made up back in your scheming little head?
It's probably going to be the *partially* the character you've made up, since Aris and I want to keep the ratios of magic types to ... the way they've been mapped out in the front page. As of now, most people have wanted natural Atanuans, but they're not all too common. We can't give anyone anything, but we'll try to accomodate you guys as best as we can. :3

> Thank-you gifts have not arrived yet - My apologies. >.<;

10.22.04: Doodzers. Flatsale tomorrow. PS: I do not eet goo. Or babees. End of story.

9.09.04: Aris Ravenstar eets goo. As does Kheleksul. whee

1. Be nice. :3 Bunnies, unicorns, and daisies in a meadow, please. If you have a problem with someone (be it a user in this thread or myself) please don't post it onto the thread: PMs are always an open option.

2. Don't pm either shopkeeper with questions like "May I have one plz?!!!1" or any such variation. (Don't post it in the thread either. XD) You can always check the frontpage (at the sales information post) to see whether or not we *are* planning on selling. If you do want to contact us with a genuine question, you can post on the thread (or you can pm Aris or Kheleksul - Preferably Aris, since Khel's pms are usually deleted (due to an oversized inbox) before she can even read them, never mind answer 'em.

3. All artwork, concept, and designs are copyrighted to Kheleksul and Aris Ravenstar unless otherwise indicated, and are not to be reproduced, redistributed, traced, editted, resold, or otherwise exploited without expressed permission from either creator.

4. This goes without saying, but don't violate the Gaian Terms of Service or Rules and Guidelines. xd

Extended Rules for Character-RPers.
1. You may not resell your character or trade him/her away. @@; You may, however, give it to a friend. (See more about this in the RP section!)

2. Please try to post every once in a while in this thread, so that we know you are alive! biggrin

3. You may not RP more than one Atanua and one Tanaoa.

This store is currently in 'alpha' stage. ((See Disclaimer!))

Q: Can I co-own [insert anything we sell here]?
A: No. One RPer is enough for one character. Two RPers simply make things chaotic. @@ (Exceptions could be made if the character has a multiple-personality disorder or some other valid reason.)

Q: Are you accepting pet trades and/or customs?
A: At this moment - no. Customs will either come from events or auctions. Pet trades are a blatant "No." This might change in the future, but as I see it, its not fair to other users, and creates a breedables "elitism" (Since it is not within a sane person's limits to do a pet trade with every store owner out there, the owner picks and chooses which pets they're willing to trade with. Not very fair.) Of course, this is coming from Khel, and Aris has nothing to do with this decision. >.o If she can convince me otherwise...

Q: Should we directly link?
A: No. Please save the images onto your own server! Photobucket offers limited bandwidth; we wouldn't want to be stuck with 'bandwidth exceeded' images all over the page. >o<;;

Q: Will you give me one for free?
A: No. Maybe. Who are you?! eek sweatdrop xd

Q: Hey! you gave so-and-so one for free, thats not fair! why did you do that?
A: That ain't none of your business. domokun We give to friends. And it is fair; we are the ones doing all the work. If you're not the one doing the work, you're not the one who can choose what happens to the results. ^_^; Not only that, but we can also choose to practice benevolence and give to active members in the thread.

Q: Can i buy one using my soul as currency?
A: If you can get it in a decent sized glass bottle. (I've got problems with TupperWare. >.< wink

These are going to be rp-intensive, right?
To a certain extent, yes.

There will be a journal, but it won't be required for you to write in it. The journal is primarily used to document what RPing you've done in the thread. That way, when we decide to grow your character, we won't have to search through the entire thread for whatever snippets of RP you've got. 3nodding (It will also be used to keep track of the character's magical prowess 'n skills. ^w^)

We can't promise, though, that your characters will grow if you don't RP. We just won't know how to draw them. sweatdrop But we can promise one thing: your character will not be taken away if you do not RP.

RP Flat Sales: (0 planned at the moment)
There are two ways in which an RP flat sale will be managed: The first version includes a required RP segment which will be reviewed by both Aris Ravenstar and Kheleksul - All those who pass the 'test' will be allowed to participate in the flat sale. (Don't worry; it won't have very harsh requirements. As long as you can string together a half-decent sentence, we'll be satisfied.) The actual flat sale will be held in a fashion similar to that of most flat sales, first post first serve. ^_~

The second method in the RP flat sale will include a (you guessed it) required RP snippet - Everyone who passes a certain quality standard or the best of the excerpts will receive a character. (after paying of course. ^-^; ) The method to be used during such a flat sale will always be indicated clearly; the tentative price of such a flat sale is 10k.

Auctions: (1 planned at the moment)
Well, we like holding many different kinds of auctions. domokun The rules and proceedings will always be stated in the auction thread. You can expect different sorts of auctions, ie: silent auctions, dutch auctions... etc. XD The kinds that are fun to participate in. (I hope.)

Events/Contests: (1 planned at the moment)
Like our auctions, the events and contests will be very diverse. Not much more can be said here. @@;

Background information:
This stuff still needs tidying up and revisions. redface

Quote:
Location and Background:
Humanity plays up to it's reputation of throwing childish temper tantrums, unknowingly inciting the largest war ever known, whimsically named "World War III". Not much is currently known about what happens during this war, except that the countries of the world nuke each other to hell, and it was not uncommon for entire populations to be destroyed in the blink of an eye. The 'war' ended with no clear victor: The fighting just stopped because everyone was too beat to keep going. The end of the war was marked by the creation of a new calendar system, NS - The year the war (and the world as we know it) ended was marked as 0 NS.

In the wake of the destruction that every war brings, much of the literature and novels were destroyed - classics lost to flames, yadayadayada. Common tools and items (that we take for granted) became rare commodities; things like, for example, matches, flashlights, electricity, plumbing (bombed out infrastructure 'n all. Numero uno military target.)... etc. Like the fall of the stock market in 1928, most people had close to no money - The few and rare individuals who did, could manipulate the depression and turn over tenfold results. The 'rich' people were the only ones able to afford simple luxuries; countries were unable to rebuild major cities as a result of little to no resources - The world was shocked back to a medieval 'primitive' sort of environment.

What of these rich people? As with every country of the world today, the country is built off of the backs of their citizens. You know the quote "Money buys power". An aristocracy among the rich forms, and starts attaching puppet strings to the arms of the government (who have no choice *but* listen, or forfeit their positions).

After countless centuries under this corrupt government system, the aristocracy managed to establish power over, not only the gov., but also the common people. Their "luxuries" (aforementioned items) were passed off as "magic" (IE: See? I can make fire! *mumbles incoherent incantations and strikes a match* *audience is cowed* ) and the truth behind this new 'magic' was forgotten over the centuries. ("People believe what they are told, and what they want to see". Plus, it was probably also forbidden to talk about life before WW3 or something. Very "1984"-esque.)

I will return to the corrupt aristocracy (called the Tanaoa) in a minute - Right now, I'm skipping off to a different section.

All right; in another part of this world (still after WW3), there is a group of *real* magic users (known as the Atanua) - Who hide (some would use the word "congregate", but I beg to differ.) up in a secret mountain recluse, honing their magical skills and growing adept at manipulating the occult. After the shock of ww3, the magic-users travel away from their hidden society, with a prophecy in their minds - To find the one who would restore humanity back to the glory it had known in the past, and banish the present horrors... (Note from the author: There is no actual proof that such a person exists; this information was found in a document sealed in a wooden box. It holds questionable authenticity, and is suspected apocryphal. Nowadays, this 'prophecy' is known to very few, and those who have heard it generally treat it as a myth or some sort of child-placating tale.) However, upon contact with the current world, some of the magic-users broke away from their society with the belief that to "remove the blindfold on humanity's head" was to "do the impossible". (Why bother trying to save what's already irretrievable? Lost?) The other half of the original magic-users slipped into the throngs of the ruined world, trying to find this person who would do what no one else could do. They are believed to still be searching for the man in their prophecies, but after several centuries, their focus may have faltered and lost sight.

Their commitment was no farce: An oath to find this person was sworn onto a magical artifact that bound all of the magic-users to the 'quest' until the man was found. As a result, the deserters' children and later generations would all feel twinges of *something* in the backs of their heads - a feeling that they should find something, but they don't know what. These people live among the 'normal people', and some, but not all, are capable of wielding magic.

At a certain point of time, date unknown, true magic started manifesting in the common people - Becoming painfully apparent at 429 NS. This burst of 'real' magi was quickly suppressed by the aristocracy: Anyone out of the high society found to be practising magic was quietly 'disposed of'. (It is not known to many, but there is an 'aristocratic gestapo', consisting of those vying for greater power and wealth. These individuals report magic-users to their local Heads in hopes of ingratiating themselves into his or her good favor.)

It is currently the year 723 NS - Most of the dark and saddening background of the people of this world has been lost. (The Khmer Rouge comes to mind.) The denizens live in ignorant happiness, satisfied as long as the matter's of the world do not affect their everyday lives.
Tanaoa - in depth!

Quote:

The aristocracy (the heads of each house that forms the aristocracy, more like) teach only their firstborn child the 'magic' - The less people who know how to use this so-called "magic", the better. (This led to many first-born assassinations, arranged by the second child...) Lessons began at an early age, at the point of a persons' life where what they is learned is quickly absorbed into their heads. They learned the incantations that brought about 'fire', 'light', 'heat', 'cell phone ring tones', and etc...

These first born children, upon reaching the age 21, are forced to take a ritual known as the 'Testing'. Not much is known in the general public about the Testing, other than what the aristocracy cares to divulge. Which is not much. (Keep in mind during RP, that people who are not the Heads do not know what is enclosed in the following section: What takes place is the first born child is told the truth behind the mechanical 'magics', the truth about the past, and how things can stay the way they are if they remain silent. The individual is bound to a magical artifact that forces silence (regarding the subject) onto them with the exception of passing the truth on to only their own first born. If the person fails the Testing, by refusing to maintain silence on the subject or by rejecting the truth (clinging on to the belief that he/she can actually do magic - and demanding that it is so), he or she would be killed on the spot, and given no proper funeral, buriel, or mourning period. Their names were erased from the family trees, and life goes on as if they've never existed. Their names are never mentioned again in the household - even children, who are not explicitly told, learn of this taboo. Rumors exist, though, that some of the castaways escaped and live with the common people. Although not bound by the artifact to keep their peace, they never reveal the truth about their technology to anyone - Fear, perhaps.)

Tanaoan FAQ:

1. In the info it's said that magic has cropped up in the common people and has been treated as illegal etc. Doesn't that figure, then, that it may have cropped up in the upper classes as well and is just not discussed or is hidden completely? If so it would mostly be sloppy and untrained and mostly weak abilities.
Well, that's a thing that I can't really say I know. If one of the Tanaoa really CAN do magic, then they will be killed during the Testing when they try to explain that magic really does exist. Anyone who is not firstborn, though, cannot practice magic, and will be summarily ... taken care of. ninja Basically, only firstborns can practice magic. Anyone else who is caught performing is killed, whether they are of the aristocracy or the common folk.

2. Could a wealthy upper class man (as has happened through history we know) have taken a common woman as a mistress just because he could (whether consensual or otherwise) and produced a child.. then kept that child as their own and because so.. magic cropped up in the child because of that man's infidelity, etc. ?
I believe the upperclassmen have the ideas that they are the master race (think the concept of Aryans as a Master race with Hitler) ingrained in their heads, and that to consort with a commoner is dirty, and looked down upon. If they did ... produce a child with a commoner, then they'd try to hide it, because otherwise that would bring shame to the family. They'd either try to dispose of the child, or send the woman far, far away from that part of the city, and pretend it never happened.

Magic doesn't crop up in people because of infidelity - it just manifested itself in the people. I haven't really thought up a good way to say it. So. Heh. If you'd like to RP it that way, it would work, since... it just manifests itself. You can't really say that it's because of the mans infidelity, though; it's more like coincidence that anything else. :3

I'm just trying to say that it is generally frowned upon, so if it does happen (which I'm sure it does. ) then the whole relationship takes place by the back door, if you know what I mean. XD

3. So the Atanoa are like true magic users right? while the Tanaoa use machines and mechanicals to do theirs right?
Correct - the Tanaoa use technology as their own form of Magic. They call it magic, and in all pretenses, it is. It's like showing a caveman a cellphone - and telling them that with it, you can call God. And that God'll tell you what to tell them to do to be in his good graces. They manipulate the common peoples.

So basically, The Tanaoa claim they can do magic, whereas, after the Testing, they realize that it really ISN'T magic. So they don't think Magic really exists in the world. The common people believe that there -is- such a thing as magic, and that the Tanaoans are magi, and thus, deserve mucho respect and groveling. The Atanauans can actually cast magic, thus, they believe in it. It's all just a circle of irony... in my own opinion, that is. whee

4. You said that the setting is sort of a medieval one. And like the common people's everything would sort of be... medieval.

Does that carry on to the aristocracy as well? Should I think of Aristocracy in terms of what it would have been like during the middle ages? Or are they a bit more advanced than that?
Yes, mostly, that does carry on. It's like taking yourself back to the middle ages - would you be able to produce your own telephone? In fact, I'm betting you wouldn't be able to build yourself a telephone. Same to these Tanaoans. They know the stuff, they can do some of it, but they just don't have enough of the knowledge and, in particular, the materials to do so with.

They live in basically the same styles as the Atanuas. Same clothes, slightly higher living standards... higher technology. I don't quite think I answered this question too well. Aris - HELP MEH!!!

5. What is the most advanced that they get with their false 'magic'?
Hrm. We've never quite thought this up yet. I'll come back to this later. >D
Atanua - In depth!

Quote:
True Magic:
Magic is able to be manipulated by a few select individuals, who, if tracing through lineage and pedigree charts, should find some ancestor who was of the original 'magic users' (who were, I reiterate, no small society. Just... incredibly hermit like and antisocial. XD). The ability to use magic is both a boon and a liability - while a person is able to ignite a flame with only a snap of his fingers -figuratively speaking, of course-, he would have to be careful not to over reach. The particular reason for this is simple: every individual has a different tolerance range. Some are capable of casting more magic than others and outlast the other in any endurance competition. The more magic a person uses, the weaker they become, both mentally and physically. To over-reach is to slowly deprive one's cells of the energy it needs, as that energy is being used up in the form of magic. Anyone who happens to do so has to wait a recuperation period -where magic cannot be used until it has been fully regenerated- or run the risk of losing their talents altogether. (Because of this risk, many magi (and offspring of the original magic-users) have been tutored in the arts of their magic. They are fully aware of the risks they run when they use their supernatural powers.) The chance of overreaching is higher if the individual is attempting magic at a higher level than they are normally accustomed to wielding, or it they lack proper training.

On the other hand, if that person suppresses the magic, bottling it up within themselves, the unnatural and unwelcome force will slowly eat away the sorcerer from the inside. Deaths in this fashion are incredibly gruesome and painful; once the 'process' starts, it is nigh impossible to stop or heal - The magi would be subject to a near two week expiration. Mercy would be to kill the man with a quick slash through the throat or, at my sister's request, "carotid artery"-. (This making the Tanaoa-gestapo more of an inconvenience.)

Magic usage is characterised by a slight chilling in the surroundings and atmosphere, and a phosphorescent glow around the caster's hands. This glow is often used to distinguish and identify the sorcerer out of a crowd; some magics, however, don't glow, but have their own trademark distinctions. Shapeshifting, for example - But these are the exceptions, and not the rule. (Shapeshifting is one of the more unique abilities and talents, as it requires raw skill, such that most do not possess, and practice. Even so, these shapeshifters are not able to step completely out of their skins to change into anything they wish - Most are limited to one form, and there are the rare individuals who can master two.)

Quote:
The magical varients within this world are immense - New strains are being discovered at the rate flies breed, except a little faster. Even so, there are general directional flows in which most magics can be classified; the main classes include (but are not limited to) elemental magic, natural magic, and lastly, celestial magic. These magics typically do not hold any superiority over another, as they match each other in strength; it is the physique of the individual that determines their 'magical-savvyness.

Of the main three types:

1. Elemental magic is the by far the most common, as well as the most diverse (among those who can conduct any of the powers, of course). Skills in this area are pretty self explanatory - Users of this class can manipulate a certain element, be it fire, water, wind, earth, or otherwise.

2. The second most common is natural magic - Which includes communicating with flora and fauna, summoning creatures to the caster's aid, and (on the higher end of the difficulty charts) shapeshifting.

3. Celestial magic: The rarest. What this category contains is usually miscellaneous, but all contain a single relation: All use variants of raw power. I know it's not a very good or informative description, but you'll know what type of magic it is if you happen to chance upon it. (Pretty magic! ^w^)

In Depth> Elemental Magic

In Depth> Natural Magic
To be brief, communication with animals isn't through words. They simply don't speak words, do they, eh? No, I didn't think so. The animals in Atea don't speak either. As a natural magic user, an Atanuan would be able to communicate to flora and fauna through emotions, images sent through minds.... the sort. This sort of magic is the easiest to master, on a lower degree, as it takes root in a person in their early lives, from as young as five or six.

Complete mastery of Natural magic, as said earlier, can yeild great powers, such as self-transformations as well as manipulations of the mind.

Atanua FAQ

1. Do ordinary people know how to use fire, and candles, and such? 'Cause... xD;;
Ordinary people do know how to use fire - but they can't bring it out, seemingly, out of nowhere, like how the Tanaoans can with matches. They'd actually have to use flint and steel. Tanaoans can use electricity, though not in any ... open spaces without wall sockets. And batteries. And stuff. o.0

2. If two Atanuas have babies, is it guaranteed that their babee will have magics, or is it a random gene like the X-Men?
In our world, no.

But for our purposes, yes, their babies will be Atanuans, since anyone can RP a normal person, and you are paying to 'play' as either an Tanaoa or an Atanua. And.. yea. o.o

3. If Natural users can talk to animals, are most of them vegetarians?
A hahahaha. *squishes* We do not tolerate smartalecks. *squish squish* >D

But really, that's up to the RPer. I'd have no qualms with eating meat if I were a Natural magic user... but maybe that's because I'm weird.

Creatures of Atea

**To avoid confusion and some heavy ended repetition, Tanaoa/Atanua RP-ers are temporarily called 'owners', while those who do not fit in the first category are called 'non-owners'. Just to avoid confusion: I don't like using 'owners' because of the connotations if offers to the character. sweatdrop

One of the main focuses (and lures?) of The Realm of Atea is it's unique RP environment, which is available to owners and non-owners - Now, you may ask, "Non-owners? Non-owners may RP?!!1" (Well, without the number, I hope.) Non-owners may RP as some of the existing NPCs (see below: Don't forget to follow the guidelines and stick as best as possible to the character profile!) to get a feel for the world and what kind of character that they would like to have. Consider it as a test-run. =) If you don't want to RP as an existing character, you are more than welcome to create a new one! The only restriction is that your character cannot be a member of the Tanaoa or Atanua, which are limited to only those who paid for them. "Normal" people live in this world too! XD

RP Guidelines::3
1. No god-modding. If you have a Tanaoa, you have to realise that your character cannot tell if someone else's character is Atanuan or not - Everyone seems the same. If you're Atanuan, you cannot kill people with a flick of the wrist (in broad daylight, no less) and escape with your life. Nobody's perfect: everyone has their own flaws, life sucks. Coincidence and luck only ride with you for so long.

2. No Batmen. Don't make your character materialize at the sound of a 'bad guy', and disappear without a trace when the problem is rectified.

3. Please keep your characters ... ( ^_^; ) in character. This is critical for everyone, moreso to those individuals who're being rp'ed by more than one person.

4. If you're RPing your own character, please document whatever RP sessions you may have into your journal. This makes it easier for me and Aris to grow your characters. 3nodding

Failure to abide by the conduct protocol will provoke us into taking the appropriate and necessary steps. domokun xd

Is RP required if I own a Tanaoa/Atanua? Our answer to you is, no. We can't force people to RP, however, it is highly encouraged, as RPing can lend to greater bonuses for existing characters and for nonowners:

Benefits For Owners:
-Your character will grow faster if you RP often, as opposed to someone who rarely participates. (The adult (and maybe adolescent) stages of the characters will be determined *by* the RP. If a user doesn't RP their character, the adult stage will probably end up as a very boring, cliche image. >>; I mean, hey - There's really no character development without RP.)

-(Atanuan adolescent / preteen stage) More RP in this stage determines the magical strength and prowess of your character - It's like learning. The more you practice, the more talented and experienced you are at something.

-Khel-ly character portraits. X3 (Fanart, more like.)
Benefits for Non-Owners:
-Higher chance of getting a Atea-Character! 0.0! If you're a thread regular, highly dedicated to The Realm of Atea, you may even just get one for freee. whee You never know when Khel will come out of her modly-vengeance-mode and switch on to a benevolent charity-angel.

-Special auction discounts. I don't need to elaborate, do I? XD

Where will the RP take place? Right here in this thread. If this project is immensely popular, it may move to Gaia's guilds system.

Inspiration drawn from the NightRunners' RP (off Gaia, will place in link when found) and the "Wheel of Time", a book series written by Robert Jordan, published by TOR. (Both sources contributed to the magic usage in this environment. Like the 'glow' and the 'bottled power'.)
