Pern has changed.

After the 9th Pass the plan to change Red Star's orbit failed and threadfall became more frequent and unpredictable.

In the 10th Pass new dragon colours were discovered and embraced by two new Weyrs, Trine Weyr in the south and Malvren Weyr in the west.

At the beginning of the 12th Pass a Wherhandler named Keller threw Pern into chaos; he led a revolution that overthrew Malvren Weyr and Benden Weyr with a promise of equality for all be they rider or handler or bondless, and without regard for the hue of a bondmate’s hide. This was not quite the utopia many hoped it would be however for the culture of the wherholds - as Benden and Malvren became known - was one of violence and, as time went by, increasingly one of paranoia and betrayal.

Trine Weyr accepted refugees from Benden and Malvren and stood against Keller, fighting to maintain tradition and to defeat the bloodthirsty revolutionaries. For some turns the two factions launched attack and counterattack on one another but it took the murder of gold Sharath at the hands of the wherholders to instigate war in earnest. Eventually all of Pern’s Weyrs were drawn into the fighting and by their combined forces - and thanks to a coup from within the wherholds by those who believed in the message of equality but hated the violence of Keller’s regime - Keller was defeated and the wherwars ended.

Whilst Keller was dead, the message that had drawn so many to his banner was not. As Pern recovered from the horrors of the wherwars talk of equality for riders of all colours began to circulate around Pern, and as momentum grew some golds began to abuse their powers in an attempt to cling on to their positions of power and privilege. If anything this only sealed their fate; it was decided that goldriders would no longer be born to power and that any dragonrider could earn any rank they were suited to. Those golds who had abused their powers or could not accept the changes fled into the wilds and became known as the Rogue Queens, outlaws who the Weyrs must now combat.
