The Gameboard

Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you. Again.

It looks like a normal die in terms of shape, and each side has a gilded number, one through six, carved into it. The most interesting part of it all is that the dice seems to be made of old, stained wood with fossilized opal throughout the whole piece. Something about it called to you, and now that it has your attention, a harsh wind slams into you. Darkness falls all around you–and then, slowly, a path illuminates. It’s black all around you; there’s no light, but you can see clearly marked spaces.

A line of squares unwind in front of you, each clearly marked.

You can’t see anything around you, can’t feel anything else–just the gameboard. And the die. Whether its in your hand or on the ground where you left it, it's there with you.

Even if you don’t recognize the game, you don’t really need instructions to know how to play–you have a die, and you have a path. In the distance, you can barely make out a dark wooden platform at the end of the path, but it seems to have the same fossilized opal inlay as the die–and pretty golden symbols along the rim.

You can’t step out of your square. Trying to leave the gameboard results in you walking to an invisible barrier and it feels like slamming into a glass wall. You cannot leave your space–unless the die says you can. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to roll your way there–but it isn’t so easy.

Strange gold markings differ from one square to the next. There’s no telling what they mean–you’re going to have to land on them to find out.

Though, judging by the tension in the air, it’s probably not going to be anything good.

What Kissling had originally thought had to be a piece of particularly pretty jewelry turned out, to his surprise, to be a six-sided die instead. He had been on patrol when he had come across the lovely flicker of color on the ground and stopped to inspect it. The opalescence of the fossilized opal inlay in the wood amazed him when he reached down to pick it up, admiring the colors.

Just then, though, a gust of wind seemed to blow out of nowhere to knock him over just as he touched the die. Before he knew what had happened, everything around him had turned too dark to be the black of night in Destiny City. At least in the city there were street lights, but when Kissling got knocked over, his sight got so dark that for a moment he thought he’d gone blind.

Space 0:
You have arrived here; nothing happens until you roll your die.

Scrambling to get up, the Dark Mirror Senshi frantically searched for signs of any other energy signatures nearby, thinking that maybe he might have been under attack. There was nothing and no one, however, deeply disconcerting him. He began to move, hoping to escape wherever he was, but he felt what seemed to be four glass walls surrounding him on all sides as if he was stuck in a box. Kissling tried to keep calm, though, and a few minutes later, his patience was rewarded with the appearance of twenty marked squares that lit up before him in the form of a winding path.

The revealed path didn’t seem to do much in terms of allowing Kissling more movement since the invisible walls surrounding him still seemed to be present when he tried to leave the square he was stuck on. It wasn’t until he tried to find something to potentially break through the walls with that he realized he had the die in his hand and it dawned on him that the path before him was reminiscent of a game board.

No way.

Was he actually supposed to roll his way out of this mess? Where did the path even lead?

Squinting, Kissling tried to peer ahead and was barely able to make out the glinting opalescent veins of color that had attracted him before – but instead of being in a die this time, they were part of a platform at the end of the path. Was that his goal, then?

He supposed there was only one way to find out.

Taking a deep breath, Kissling crouched down and rolled the die.

Space 5:
A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds.

Uh oh.

Kissling had been chased by dogs before when he'd lived on the streets. It was terrifying not knowing what the animals might do to him if and when they caught up with him, which fueled his running with adrenaline. Usually, when he encountered a stray dog on the streets, he could simply parkour or freerun his way to safety, usually getting up somewhere higher like a fire escape or a rooftop. As there was nothing of the sort where he was just then, however, and no place for him to run because he was still stuck on the fifth square, there was only one other thing to do.

Reaching down to pick up his die, he quickly rolled it in the hopes it would allow him to escape to a new square.

Space 6:
You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.

The blond senshi startled with a gasp as the shrill, humming noise in his ears was followed up by a sharp burst of air. Reaching up to touch his cheek, his fingers came away wet with his blood. Whatever had shot past him - thread? - had grazed him close and fast enough to cut his face. He was not keen on staying on that space any longer than he had been to stay on the first. Who knew where the next thread might cut him or how deeply? Even if it didn't cut him when it shot out, there was also the possibility of getting tangled in the threads and being cut up that way instead.

It might not have been the same danger as being ripped apart by animals, but it was still hazardous to his health and terrifying. With his cheek cut beginning to sting, Kissling crouched down to avoid as many more thread shots as he could and to also control his next die roll better as he let his die clatter to the floor.

Space 11:
You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

A move of five spaces wasn't bad at all. Kissling's luck with die rolls seemed to have returned as he moved forward the same amount of spaces as the number shown on the upturned die face. When he got there, he heard a great deal of frantic flapping and looked up instinctively to see what the source of the sound was. Unfortunately, that was the exact moment when the cloud of bats chose to fall upon him - scratching with their tiny claws, slapping him with their leathering wings, and screeching shrilly enough to make his ears hurt.

Luckily, they didn't seem to try to bite him just yet and Kissling dearly hoped they weren't the sort of dreaded vampire bats he had heard about. They were bats who, although they didn't turn into actual vampires, really did bite and suck blood from their victims. Then again, with the way the gameboard and its spaces were set up, who knew? The bats really could have turned out to be actual vampires in disguise.

Not wanting to stick around to find out, Kissling ducked down again, covering his head as best he could with one arm while his other arm tossed the die in his hand in order to roll for the next number of spaces he could move forward.

Space 17:
Something howls in the distance. It’s loud and echoes with such ferocity it seems to shake you. On the other side of you–another howl. Closer. This one is loud enough to hurt your ears. The ground trembles with the force of something charging at you. A growl, a snarl. Yellow eyes staring you down. There’s not just one monster out there–there’s several, and they’re all coming for you.

Having rolled a spectacular six, Kissling moved a wonderful six spaces forward onto the space marked '17'. He was extremely glad of how quickly he was making progress in his attempt to get what appeared to be the 20th space - at least from what he could see just then - although he began to worry that the closer he got to the end, the more dreadful the threats on each space would become. He supposed there was only one way for him to find out, but he hoped to be as swift with his dice rolls from then on out as possible so he didn't have to find out too much. The Dark Mirror Senshi was more intent on avoiding harm than satisfying his curiosity, after all.

As soon as he landed on the 17th space, several howls reached him from a distance, chilling him a great deal more than the barks he first heard on space 5 when he had originally started out. Several howls simultaneously likely meant they belonged to several creatures. And if those several creatures hunted in a pack such as, say, wolves, then Sailor Kissling knew he was done for.

Ignoring the echoes of the howls and the closer howls coming from his other side, Kissling bent down close to the ground. Fighting to ignore the ground's trembling and not daring to look up at what creatures might have been close enough to see, the blond rolled his die immediately, grateful for a way out of that space.

Space 20:
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Kissling shot from space 17 like a marathon runner, racing to the very last space and the platform he hoped would allow him somehow to return home to Destiny City. He wasn't sure where he was just then, but he was certain he wasn't there. Once more, he was grateful to have rolled very high even if he had only needed three spaces more rather than the five he had rolled to get to his goal destination. What mattered most to him, however, was getting to the opalescent-veined platform that matched his die.

Once he reached the platform, he was instantly basked in the glow of an aura that matched the opalescence that attracted him to the die he had found in the first place. When the glow faded, Kissling gasped in relief and appreciation. He was home! He reached up to feel the cut on his cheek and discovered that it was still there, but at least he hadn't suffered any worse than that and a little mental trauma from his frequent attacks of fear. He was probably one of the luckier ones, too, if multiple people had gotten caught up in the same dimension he had. With the exception of one roll, he had only rolled fives and sixes, so he had gotten to the end after landing on relatively few spaces in between.

Thanking his lucky stars, Kissling kissed his die out of gratitude and pocketed it, glad not to be able to sense any more magic emanating from it.
