The Lilypads (16) : You can find them in lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and waterways throughout Destiny City. Giant lilypads--some large enough to support the weight of a person--appear overnight. You can try, if you want. It's become a local trend, and pictures are all over social media--of people looking for the largest lilypads, or the smallest ones they can stand on. You'd think the unnatural bubbling around the lilypads would be enough of a sign not to mess with them, but sometimes people need to learn the hard way. Beneath the lilypads lurk strange frog-like creatures that regard nearly everything as prey. The largest of them are roughly the size and shape of a bean bag chair, but they can be as small as a fist. Their broad heads are crowned with lilypads that serve as natural camouflage, allowing them to hide among the floating vegetation until they strike. They move with startling speed and can launch themselves impressive distances with powerful kicks. Long, whip-like tongues lash out to snatch prey, while thick mucus-like saliva can cling to skin, clothing, and even immobilize unfortunate victims. Their skin carries a toxic coating that can cause irritation on contact. The creatures announce themselves with a deep croak that sounds uncannily like a large bell being rung just by your ears. Unfortunately, for anyone that was respecting nature, these strange creatures are aggressive and will also attack without provocation, often attempting to drive even innocent bystanders away from the water's edge. However, if sufficiently threatened, they may retreat into the water. Once submerged, they become impossible to track.

Sailor Bacchus had heard enough about the unusual lilypads to pique his curiosity. Earth’s flora had taken the back of the clíatha in the face of its fauna during his explorations, but these at least seemed novel enough to be worth investigating. Leaning over the pool he scrutinized the strange plants, assessing them for sturdiness. After all, if he was to win the bet he’d made with Sailor Medusa he needed to figure out which of his potential targets was most likely to be able to support the bulk of a man noticeably larger than most of the rest of Earth’s residents.

Stretching out a long arm, he poked at the nearest one that looked like it could do the job. Bubbles breaking the surface were a bit of a surprise for a pool that looked relatively clean. Maybe there something hiding in the muck at the bottom since it really didn’t seem like there was enough decaying material for that to be the source. At the end of the day, however, the important thing was winning this wager.

Shooting a grin at his companion, the deep space senshi took an uncharacteristically cautious step onto the nearest lilypad.

Medusa watched Bacchus inspect the pads with an uncharacteristic consideration. In truth, she was pleasantly surprised. It was more thought than she'd seem him put into much, and that simply wouldn't do. The key to winning these bets was to goad him into forgetting himself, and if he kept up this whole thoughtfulness nonsense, she might find herself sunk.

Nope. That wouldn't do.

Medusa tilted her head to the side as he stepped up and seemed to be safe and sound. Truly a shame. Still, she returned his smile with a bemused one of her own.

"Beginner's luck," she declared, before, under her breath but still loud enough for him to hear, "Chicken."

Focused only on the competition, she stepped without hesitation onto a lily pad near Bacchus' that was just smaller than his. It bobbed, but held, and the bubbles went unnoticed as she tried desperately to keep her balance while looking as nonchalant as possible until it finally settled.

With a flip of her braid, she flashed him a challenging grin.

"Beat that, Bigfoot."

Bacchus had learned what a chicken was over the course of the past year or so and even if he hadn’t had much opportunity to interact with them, he understood that they were as thoroughly associated with cowardice as they were with deliciousness. He was fairly certain that he could rule out the second meaning, but history had shown that he should never get too complacent about the possibility that something might be around to give him an exploratory nibble.

The senshi laughed at Medusa’s goad as he shifted his weight as best he could atop the precariously undersized lilypad as it threatened to sink under the bulk of his body. A downward glance betrayed the intensifying of the bubbles beneath him, but any subaqueous activities were well beyond the limited scope of his interest. Defeating his friend was a far more pressing matter.

“You’d best pay attention to your own poultry!” He crowed back at her as he made a decisive leap toward another floating platform of questionable stability.

“Ah, ******** ******** ejected a series of profanities as the plant shifted beneath him, threatening his already unreliable balance before his teetering form toppled into the water. Relief though it might have been on one of Destiny City’s other oppressive summer days, the sound of a cacophonous croak broke any illusion of a peaceful ending to this story.

Ears ringing, the deep space senshi was shocked to find himself locked in eye contact with the largest frog he ever could have hoped to encounter. Before he could take a moment to appreciate this discovery a sticky projectile shot forth from the hostile bubbler’s mouth, pulling him far too close for comfort.

“Rootless son of a ********> His long limbs flailed in the direction of his assailant, unable to keep up with the bizarreness of this situation.
