2026 Star Festival Prompt
The Lantern Festival (7) : Scientists have been hard at work trying to understand the strange, glowing qualities of the luminescent caterpillars found in the caves by the reservoir. The caterpillars still shrivel up if they are taken out of the caves but their glowing secretions have been processed into an organic paste that can withstand the outside world. The city is selling paper lanterns infused with various seeds. The glow paste is full of minerals to support healthy plant growth without risking damage to the environment; all lantern purchases come with a small packet of activating power that will heat the paste up enough to mimic the effects of a candle without the concerns of flammability. When the glow paste loses its heat, the lantern will return to the Earth and upon the first rain (or any contact with water) the paper will dissolve and the seeds may begin to grow. All proceeds from the lanterns are put right back into the community to support local conservation and environmental protection efforts.

Ginyami was extremely happy to have a night off to spend with Sara going through the Star Festival. After how busy they'd been for the past several weeks, it was a relief to finally get to have some time off from work, studies, and Negaverse duties, but also to be able to spend it with his fiancé. He was sure Sara could have used the break, too, with how hardworking his partner was. That night was the perfect night, too, since it was Tanabata, the 'Evening of the Seventh'. It was the seventh day of the seventh month which made it the main day for the Star Festival.

Although Destiny City's Star Festival festivities seemed to last for more or less a month between June and July, the evening of July seventh was supposed to be the date and time that the festival was centered around. It was the evening when the star-crossed lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, would either get to see each other for the first time in a year or have to wait until the same date next year to see each other again if it rained. Ginyami was dearly hoping it didn't rain - both for the star-crossed lovers' sakes and for his and his own lover's sakes.

As they passed the many vendors and stalls of games, food, and other festival wares, Ginyami accepted a sapphire star charm from a volunteer passing them out and thanked them for it before moving along with Sara. He wondered if Sara got homesick for Japan sometimes, especially since he had come from a small village to the bustling Destiny City in America, but he hoped that partaking in the Star Festival would alleviate that homesickness somewhat if he did. There were a lot of the same traditions such as placing a wish on a wishing tree and even lighting lanterns.

The lanterns in particular caught Ginyami's attention because it seemed like the activity was toted to be very environmentally friendly. This was especially noteworthy to Ginyami because as someone who was the heir to a business in Japan that sold plants, herbs, and other natural ingredients, he thought he could adopt similar techniques to apply to his business practices in order to attract more environmentally conscious customers. Japan itself was, after all, well-known for being a very environmentally conscious country with a nature-loving culture.

When he attempted to purchase a couple of lanterns for himself and Sara, he discovered that the paper the lanterns were made from were infused with seeds so that the seeds could grow almost anywhere the lanterns ended up falling. The lanterns were also not meant to be lit with fire, but with an organic glowing paste collected from the secretions of bioluminescent caterpillars from some of Destiny City's caves so even that was natural and more harmless to the environment than smoke or fire could have been. Along with the caterpillar secretions, the glow paste was supposed to include minerals that supported healthy plant growth with no damaging risk to the environment. There was even a packet of activating powder provided to heat up the paste in order to mimic a candle's heat and light without using a candle itself, allowing the lantern to still become airborne.

Supposedly, once the lantern fell back down to earth, rain or some other water source would be enough to dissolve the paper so the seeds could reach the soil and be given nutrients from the glow paste in order to grow. The whole concept was pretty genius. And as if that wasn't enough, all the lantern proceeds were supposed to support local conservation and environmental protection efforts within Destiny City's community itself.

"What do you think, Sara?" Ginyami asked with a grin. "With all these festivities for Tanabata, are you reminded of Japan?"
