1/27/07

Rukiya: It was raining when I found her... I had been running until my legs felt like lead, searching for a warm, safe haven where I would be able to just collapse and drift into sleep, but every turn I made, every place I found seemed to be taken by some other abandoned pet. I wasn't intimidated by any of the creatures I spotted, but I just didn't want to have to resort to fighting. I knew that I was weak from all that searching, and I knew that if I fought, I would end up dying in the rain. The biting cold started to numb my paws as I frantically looked for a vacant spot, knowing that my time was running short. That's when I saw it. Across the busy streets and through the crowds of people was a small but brightly colored backpack laying against a chair at a ramen stand.

There was no hesitation. I ran to the bag instinctively, dodging human legs and zooming cars, the smell of chicken seasoning filling my nostrils. I forced my hunger to the side as I made one more leap before throwing myself against the backpack. My eyes darted from side to side, looking for zipper. I saw it and ripped it aside, squeezing my body into the bag. It wasn't too warm like a sunny day, but it helped keep the biting cold off of my body. My back was pressed lightly against textbooks and some fuzzy tennis balls, but I quickly fell asleep. The next thing I knew, I was in a beautifully painted room. Shades of green embraced the walls as I even noticed the smell of a elephant leaf plant, to see it growing in the corner of the room next to the windowsill. I let out a sigh of awe, before noticing that I was incredibly warm..actually uncomfortably warm. I looked at my paws and saw that I was wrapped up in a small cream blanket, which I believed was a heating blanket. I squeezed out of it a little, revealing my torso so I wouldn't be as hot, only to have a question suddenly pop up in my mind: Where am I?

I continued looking around the room and then I saw her. Across from the bed that I was laid on, there was a teenage girl with black hair and glasses. She was sleeping with her head on what I believed to be one of the textbooks that I had been pressed against earlier. Her glasses askew, her mouth open and drooling, she seemed to me..like the strangest creature. I saw the backpack that had carried me to this haven beside her feet, and I couldn't help but smile. I wondered what was going to happen to me now. Snuggling back into the cocoon of blanket, I felt my eyelids grow heavy as I released a yawn. I fell asleep looking at the girl, wanting to tell her how thankful I was that she rescued me from the rain. My mind blurred with the image of my last owner..but sleep embraced me and dissolved my past memories as I felt myself being reborn.

Kaurii: Waking up from a nightmare about the boy I had a crush on, I looked out my window and saw that it had begun to rain. I felt as if fate was trying to tell me something..but my mind simply wandered, unable to decifer any mystical behind-the-scenes meanings. Brushing my hair, I continued to stare outside, not looking at anything in particular, just staring. I soon finished brushing my hair, but my eyes lingered on the rain on my window. I had the feeling that today was going to be an eventful day. Slipping into my school's uniform, I brushed my fingertips against the North Durem High School's patch to feel the embroidery on it, tracing the large N and D with my index finger. I sighed, slipping my shoes on as I did.

"Today's the day.."

I grabbed the note that I had planned on giving to an upperclassman and shoved it into my skirt pocket. Already wearing a girlish blush, I left my room, grabbing my brightly colored backpack on my way out. ..I ran back into my room a few seconds later to grab my Chemistry book and then out the door I went again. Perfectly timed, my Eggo waffles popped out of the toaster and I grabbed them with my right hand as I waved goodbye to my family. My eyes fluttered over to the clock and I realized that if I didn't leave and run to school at that very moment..I was going to be late to class..again. Grabbing my favorite panda shaped umbrella, I ran outside, my Eggos dangling from my mouth, and popped the umbrella open. I slung my backpack over my left shoulder and ran out into the cobblestone streets. The icy air numbed my legs as I ran, but my face burned brightly. I was going to let my feelings be known today. I was going to tell him that I loved him..though I was merely a sophomore. Running through a shortcut of mine, I shoved the rest of my waffles into my mouth and chewed rapidly. My school was coming up and I didn't want to arrive looking like a hamster!

I pushed myself through the gates and looked around. Many students were still in the courtyard, so I relieved a sigh of relief, knowing that I hadn't missed even the first bell yet. I thought I would calm down, but I didn't as my eyes and my heart looked from face to face, looking for the upperclassman. Soon, I spotted him and I felt my face grow even warmer. I slipped my hand into my skirt pocket and then felt the edges of the note run against my skin. I smiled mentally as I saw his friends leave him, the first bell having rung now. I hurried over to him, knowing my face was a bright pink but uncaring.

"Shin!" I called, pulling the note out of my pocket as I approached him. He turned to me with a smile and then waved. My heart began to race, realizing the moment was finally here. I couldn't utter a word as he waved to me, but I smiled and managed to give him the note, twisting my umbrella nervously. I was about to walk away when he stopped me, grabbing my left arm gently. I turned to face him to see that he had unfolded the note and had already began to read it. I was on the verge of tears as I waited for his answer, hoping, dreaming that my happy ending was here. Finally he spoke.

"I'm..sorry Kaurii. But, your friend, Len, has already..asked me. She told me last week that you weren't interested in me..so I..accepted her offer. I'm sorry Kaurii-chan," he said softly as I felt the tears run down my face. Warm watermarks slid down my face as I began to choke on my tears, looking up at him though saying nothing. We both stood silently before he apologized once again and then headed to class. I was mortified at his response, standing alone in the rain as the second bell rang. I dropped my umbrella in the courtyard and felt my legs carry me off school campus. I was done with school for that day. Heading anywhere, I noticed that being depressed and heartbroken made me quite hungry. I wandered the streets aimlessly, with only a few dollars in my wallet, looking for a restraunt that would appetise me. I found a cheap little ramen stand a few miles away from my school, and I smirked a little. Ramen was the remedy for any illness..even young love.

I bought myself a small bowl of chicken ramen, somewhat irritated now at my foolishness. Why had I left my umbrella?! Feeling incredibly stupid, I separated my wooden chopsticks and began to eat my ramen. After I was done, I bent over to grab my backpack and then noticed the top was unzipped. I looked into my bag, thinking I had been robbed, but immediately after taking a peek, I spotted a teal and grey colored..dog? I saw its fur, drenched and I felt a great sadness. I mean..Two lonely, heartbroken souls would make great company for each other right? Picking up my bag, I headed home, walking now as I tried to clear my mind. When I arrived home, my family had already gone to work and school, so I knew I was safe. I headed straight towards my room and carefully removed the sopping creature from my pack.

It was girl and I was happy. I didn't think I could deal with a male at that moment. I looked around my room and found my old baby heating blanket. Drying her off carefully, not wanting to wake the sleeping dog, I then wrapped her up in the heating blanket. I placed her on my bed, smiling, as I then went over to my closet and removed myself of my uniform. I would tell my parents that I was sick, and I would forge a note for my teachers that I was sick. Changing into my pajamas, I then dragged my bag to my desk. I began doing my next Algebra II assignment when I felt myself grow warm again. A fever had consumed me, from being out in the rain, and then I grew sleepy. I immediately fell asleep on top of my textbooks.

1/28/07:

Rukiya: Today I awoke grudgingly, my aching muscles hissing at the sunlight that hit my face. I stretched, arching my back, as I noticed the heat that had engulfed me the previous night was gone. The knob on my heated blanket read off, so I felt that someone had turned it off while I slept. The girl! I looked around the room, in somewhat of a panic, before noticing that I was alone. I crawled out of the blanket, shaking my fur as I did, to begin my quest to find her. I had only managed to slide down the blankets of her bed, when the bedroom door burst open. I landed softly on the carpeted floor before immediately standing up on my paws in a defensive pose. Monster, siblings,..monster, I had to prepare myself..But then in she came.

I knew it was her by her long black flowing hair, but I could tell that she was different. Her glasses were fit correctly on her face but now, I was able to tell that she had beautiful cerulean eyes that sparkled with a sense of happiness. A smile was also decorated onto her features, fitting nicely, as her lips were also painted a lovely, blood-pounding red. She immediately saw me looking at her and approached. I let out the only noise I knew for that kind of situation.

"ARF!" I barked, feeling my face grow warm. She paused in her approach, before snapping and heading towards her desk. I watched as she dug through a large drawer and then pulled out a bag of treats. I felt my stomach do back-flips. I hadn't eaten in a few days, and the realization of how hungry I was hit me. I accidentally let out a pathetic whine, as she brought the goods over to me. She merely dumped some of the treats out onto her gorgeous bedsheets and allowed me to eat off of them. I devoured them happily, unaware that instictively, my tail had been wagging as hard as it ever was. When I as done, she began to pet me.

Oh! The touch of a human never felt so comforting to me! I laid myself down next to her, allowing the caressing to continue as I listened to her words softly.

"I'm Kaurii Lefay. I found you in my bag the other night, dear puppy, and knew that my prayers had finally come true. I didn't think that you would even be a runaway by the way your fur was matted and messed up. I simply decided to keep you. Hmm..but what to name you.." she purred, twisting a strand of her hair with her spare hand.

"Roo?" I attempted to mimic, as she broke out into an even wider smile.

"I'll call you Rukiya!" she giggled, as she embraced me softly. I felt as if I was shocked by a million bolts of electricity as my heart seemed to explode as well. I had never had a name before! I had never felt so much love from a stranger! I wagged my tail softly against her before letting out a bark of an approval.

For the rest of the day, Kaurii took me many places. One place she took me to was a store, where Kaurii got a beautiful black collar for me. I must say, the collar is stunning! She also took me to a small park in the city, where I laid in her lap contently as she read stories or drew sketches of the landscape. But while she gave me a new taste of life, I could only think of one thing.

Rukiya. Rukiya.

A name that meant more to me than any material possession.

Rukiya: It was about ten minutes ago when Kaurii awoke me from my deep slumber. I was hesitate in waking up, but soon obeyed when she turned her bedroom light on. My eyelids fluttered as I turned my head to look at her panda clock. It read...12:10 AM. I rolled my eyes and growled lightly in protest, but she simply ignored me, slipping into some heavy clothing. I stretched and then snuggled back into my cocoon of blanket, watching her nonetheless. As she slipped on a red sweater and into some form-fitting blue jeans, Kaurii said,

"I want to take you somewhere really special tonight, Rukiya. I think you'll like it."

I showed little interest, though inside I was truly curious. She had taken me to a million and one places that day, and I couldn't believe she was still able to think of one more place for us to visit. I snorted harshly at her, only to receive a giggle in response. After brushing her hair, she picked me up in my bundle and slowly and quietly led us down to the backyard. Kaurii hopped her fence with me in her arms and that's when I understood why she had dressed so warmly. Without the rain's slight warmth, the air was dryly cold, and I couldn't help but sneeze. Kaurii kissed my head lightly, apologizing on the way as I noticed that even the streets looked deserted. A feeling of unsecurity fell upon me, seeing dark alleyways and unseen eyes glancing back. I fell deeper into my bundle, wishing to disappear, though Kaurii finally said,

"Here we are."

I looked up and saw a giant lake and a wave of serenity hit me. The song of the crickets, the soft splashing of the water, the peaceful, quiet quacks of the ducks. It all appeared in perfect harmony, as if a symphony. I stopped my whimpering as Kaurii led me closer to the water. Finally, we had reached the water's edge and she allowed me to look into the water with her and as I did, I felt...completely amazed.

In the lake, I was able to perfectly see the reflection of the stars above us. I looked up at the gorgeous night sky and then back at the water, and saw no difference in the two. I heard Kaurii let out a sigh of awe as well, and I smiled, letting out a yelp of happiness. I nuzzled against Kaurii as we sat on a bench nearby the water for a bit and stared at the water. Every time she shows me something I believe is insignificant, I learn that really..it has more significance than anything else. As Kaurii held me closer to her body to prevent me from getting colder, I felt as if I understood the meaning of life at that moment. It isn't about seeing everything in an overall view or looking at only the "big and important" things, but it's about noticing the small, seemingly insignificant things along the way to seeing the big things. As I fell asleep in her arms, I thought that Kaurii was the perfect mother for me. I thought...that even a cold winter night could make someone feel alive with an eternal flame.

1/31/07:
I awoke late today to see that Kaurii had already gone to school. Alone but comfortable, I saw that she had also left me a small bowl of kibble beside her bed. I hopped down from my spot on the bed and immediately bee-lined for the kibble. For some reason lately, I've just been so attached to food. It seems to be my comfort. Well, Kaurii has also be coming home late nowadays, since she says some season has started up. Teen is? Tan is? Something like that. She always takes some neon green-yellow balls with her and also a large kind of..circular shaped thing it with a stick at the end. She calls it her "racket"? Whatever that is. She promised me though, that one day she'd show me what she was doing. I'm grateful, since I don't think I can figure it out by myself.

Well, today, I decided to explore the house. A little after Kaurii leaves, I've listened and have been able to discover the following: She has a mother and a father, since their voices are deeper and more intelligent sounding, and then two brothers. I suppose they are twins or copies since I always hear them speak in unison. It's..quite disturbing actually. Anyways, today I snuck out of her room and got my first look downstairs. At the top of her stairs, I was able to see the great living room with its beautifully hung candelier hanging above the dining table and part of the kitchen, which had tile flooring. I crawled down the stairs and reached the bottom only to stare in awe. From my small perspective, everything appeared HUGE.

I was intimidated at first but regained my courage as I walked around. Passing the large television and dark green couch, I exited the living room and found the kitchen. The tile floor bit at my paws with its icy touch, but I soon grew accustomed to it and continued on. Silver and blackness seemed to decorate the kitchen and I couldn't help but wag my tail. Then I found a room Kaurii had never even mentioned to me. It smelled of sweet perfume and of some odd powder. I looked around and saw beautiful cherry wood cabinets and dressers and then I noticed a long stunning dress hanging on the closet door..and at that moment I knew whose room it was: Her mothers. Kaurii had informed me that her parents had separate bedrooms, since they would fight a lot, and I listened intently as Kaurii loved to describe her mother's room, which was similar to a forbidden zone.

No one was allowed in it, without the mother's permission. I felt a kind of dangerous adrenaline, knowing..I would be entering forbidden lands. I stepped in. Nothing happened. And so, with a new bravery, I raced around the room, taking in the gorgeous scents deeply and sighing in awe. Her mother's room smelled so good! I laid on the large queen sized bed for a moment, before letting out a yawn. Besides eating, I have recently been sleeping quite a bit as well. And so, I laid on that envious bed, sprawled out as if I had been murdered and fell asleep.

The next thing I heard was a young girl's scream, and I saw Kaurii with a panic-stricken face. I jolted upright before feeling guilty at being caught in her mother's room, but she completely ignored my redness. Kaurii dropped her schoolbag in the kitchen and carefully ran into her mother's room and grabbed me. I couldn't help but yelp at the sudden action, though I understood clearly. She took me up to her room, carefully dropped me onto her bed, and ran back downstairs. Next I heard a loud sucking noise, and after a few minutes, Kaurii returned. She scolded me harshly, but I didn't rebel. One moment in that room and I would never need another beautiful opportunity again. I had taken my fill of those scents, and I apologized to Kaurii, licking her face softly. After that...

She stopped giving me my bacon treats! D:
I swear.. If there was anything I could give for my treats back..I have now learned that with reckless actions comes heavy consequences..*sigh*

2/3/07

This week/weekend has seemed to go by slowly. I watch Kaurii go to school, and I wait all day for her to come back. She still goes to her 'tannis' practice after school so she takes even longer than before. I've wandered her home several times now, and I've grown accustomed to all the little odds and ends of her home..Like her twin brothers' room, which is slightly darker than hers, with its walls covered in papers. I've learned that there is an invisible wall between me and the outside when Kaurii is not home. She calls it a "glass door." Whatever.

I seem to become more and more bored with each passing day. I hate being bored..and lazy. I love change..*sigh* Luckily though, Kaurii has been taking me places in the evening, so I always run out my energy at night. One day she took me to the ramen stand from the first day we met, and she bought me some delicious noodles. They tasted like pork, and I loved them! They just slid down my throat and made me stomach feel so warm. Another day she took me to a zoo, where I stared in awe at the larger animals. My favorite was the wolf, who I communicated with for a while. It seemed very pleasant.

Soon, Kaurii also plans to take me to a special Valentine's festival that will take place on the Isle of Gambino. I can't wait!

Kaurii surprised me today with a simple statement. She told me that she planned on bidding on another pet in her friend's store. I didn't quite understand, but basically, she told me that I may be getting a brother?! I protested loudly, barking basically all day until she finally scolded my behavior and placed me into a dog carrier for about thirty minutes. The solitude of that cage quieted me a bit, but in my mind, I was still screaming.

I mean, why would she need another pet?! She has me, right? Kaurii even had the nerve to describe the demon to me. He supposedly has crimson fur and is "so so so sooooo cute." When she informed me of this, I felt nauseous. Firstly, I am to believe that I am somewhat of a feminist, and secondly, I ...I dislike sharing Kaurii. She is mine, I am hers. WHY MUST THERE BE ANOTHER LOVE IN HER LIFE?! For the rest of the day, I fumed silently.

2/5/07

Today I was surprised to have Kaurii awake me extremely early to invite me to her school. I was more than ecstatic, and I slipped into her backpack willingly. She had invited me on this day, to show me "someone special" as she would repeatedly say. I barked happily. Slipping into her bag, I peered out through a small hole on the side and saw herds of young humans rushing towards a large building. Kaurii had never taken me to the school, or even by it, so when we first approached, I felt my tail wag enthusiastically. I was so full of energy now!

The building was large, a bit grey, but large. It had flat rooves, and a large courtyard filled with beautiful flowers and vivid green grass. I shook quietly since it was still cold out, though it rained no more. I heard Kaurii exchange greetings with some of her friends, but I cared not. I was so absorbed in the background, that when the loud ringing of the school bell echoed throughout the streets, I was brought back to reality. Kaurii carried me to her first class, and I ended falling asleep as I listened to the monotone teacher speak something about wars and numbers, but oh well. I highly doubt it had any significance to me. Then another bell rang and Kaurii took me to more of her classes. The day passed like that until lunch. The air was filled with .."different" aromas and I felt my stomach growl. Kaurii had forgotten to feed me that morning, so....yeah.

She took me out into the back of the school, sitting us on a nice spot under a lovely tree. The sun shone brightly as Kaurii also pulled out the small sandwiches she had made for us. She gave me a small piece of her chicken salad as well, and I ate it thankfully. That's when a boy with dark hair and matching onyx eyes waved to Kaurii and smiled. I noticed that she lowered her hands, but forced a smile onto her face. I sensed her unhappiness at that moment, but held it in as she did.

"Hey Kaurii! Is that your dog? Haha.. Don't you know animals aren't allowed on campus?" the boy laughed as he approached with a curly-haired blonde hanging on his arm. I snorted at his appearance and his aquaintance's but remained cool and collected. Kaurii put her sandwich down as she wiped her mouth, nodding.

"I know, but Rukiya just seemed so irritated and cramped when I left her every day at home. So I decided to bring her along to school today. You won't tell will you, Shin?" Kaurii replied with another faux smile as I noticed her grip on her napkin tightened.

The boy laughed and shook his head. There was an awkward silence before the blonde pushed her body closer to his and then he bid farewell. He hesitated, but then walked off with the other girl hanging off of his arm. I snorted once again before looking back up at Kaurii, to see tears roll slowly down her cheeks. I whined softly, licking her hand in attempt to comfort her. Kaurii laughed but shook her head, rubbing her tears away. It was at that moment I felt a sudden dislike towards the boy and girl who had left. I was about to chase after them and bite their ankles so hard they'd know that Kaurii was one not to mess with, but Kaurii stroked my fur softly as she regained my attention.

"That, Rukiya, is what you call love. A boy and a girl...together like nothing else matters." Kaurii let out a heavy sigh as I laid my head on her lap. The sun continued to shine happily, but we felt a heavy grey cloud loom over us. The bell rang and the rest of the day went by in kind of a blur...

Today, I learned that love was a thing to be hated.

2/7/07

I haven't written in my journal in many days, and I admit I'm somewhat ashamed at my laziness, but really, I have been busy. Kaurii started taking me to her tennis practices after school, and I helped bring her balls and drinks. Her teammates drowned me in attention, and I loved it! But then, Kaurii started coming home more and more, and that's when I learned that she was sick. I have been hiding under her bed so that when her brothers come and bring her soups and snacks, they don't see me and I make sure to remain quiet. I overheard them say that she has a high fever and her breathing is becoming a challenge for her. I have become worried sick.

Kaurii is my everything: my mother, my friend, and my special someone. I'm unsure whether I love her or not, like she does that dark haired boy, but I think I love her in a different way. And so, I have begun to worry. Will she make it to tomorrow? I ask myself that every day. She currently has been sick for two days, but I hope that she gets better soon.

I actually got sick as well, from worrying. Kaurii realized this when one evening she struggled to get out of bed to feed me, and noticed that I still hadn't even eaten my breakfast. She scolded me and told me to eat, to be healthy in her place, and I tried to obey but I simply ended up sleeping with her instead of eating. We have both grown so weak and exhausted, I wonder if we will end our lives together with these illnesses..

I'm growing more and more afraid of the future as this sickness persists.

2/9/07

I awoke today feeling a lot better than I had been over these last few days. My brothers took care of me real well, and I am thankful for their kindness. They even alerted my teachers and got my homework for me so that this weekend I can catch up. My parents have worried too over me. My mom even attempted to skip work for a little while, but I told her not to. I'm so happy to feel better but now I'm afraid I've gotten Rukiya sick...

Last night, I woke up around midnight because I heard small whimpers from Rukiya's dog carrier. I had placed her the previous night in a large dog carrier I bought and had placed next to my desk. Well, I awoke and sleepily looked over to the carrier to see Rukiya sweating and whimpering frantically. I believes she was having a nightmare so I went over and woke her gently. Immediately she let out a yelp of a surprise and I saw that her fur was damp with sweat and her eyes were droopy. I started to cry lightly as I stroked her fur and then went to the bathroom to get her a damp cloth. I came back to find her sleeping again, and I frowned in concern as I placed the wet cloth over her small body. I saw her face cringe at first when the cool towel touched her enflamed skin, but then she seemed to relax and sleep soundlessly. I smiled then, and returned to bed..my mind rushing with worries.

I hadn't meant to get Rukiya sick, physically and mentally. I know she was also thinking about the other dog I am trying to purchase from another owner, and I know she didn't like it. So I just feel so bad about the whole thing!

Oh dear Rukiya..I hope you get better and worry not about the other dog. I just want you to have a friend while I'm away from home.

2/12/07

I finally awoke today, feeling quite better, as the sun kissed me 'Good morning.' Immediately, I looked around the room and barked for Kaurii. That's when I saw IT. Beside me, on Kaurii's bed, was a crimson colored dog sleeping soundlessly..with a collar similar to my own. I grew enraged instantly and started to bark wildly at the dog. So she HAD purchased another. Oooh. How betrayed I felt! The dog awoke slowly, blinking several times before even acknowledging me. That's when I felt my voice fade quickly. I was caught staring at the pup, who had begun to stretch and yawn for one trait of his caught...no, demanded my attention. As I am proud of my stunning deep sea colored eyes, I felt that the pup in front of me must be adored for his. His eyes were such a piercing green, that anyone he looked at would probably stare. They were not too dark or bright, just somewhere in between that made whomever look into them feel as if they were being embraced by Mother Nature herself. I believe..I have the confidence to say that with his eyes, that pup could persuade anyone, even the gods, if he wished. He perked his ears up and then looked over at me. I felt my nose grow warm in embarassment.

..But he simply smirked and then sat up, wagging his tail lightly against the bed covers. I had been able to tell he was a male from the scent that he gave off, but also because he was bigger than me. Much bigger. His paw alone was twice the size of my biggest hind paw. I felt myself become submissive but then, I don't think it was because of his size. I think it was because of his expression, his..I can't explain it. He was purebred, since his body was so perfectly sculpted and his size was so great. He had an attractive presence. And soon, I found myself investigating him. We walked around each other, sniffing and smiling in his case, before he let out a bark of approve.. I was somewhat confused. I snorted at him before hopping off the bed and walking over to my dog carrier. I walked in a circle a few times on my bed before looking out my door at him and then turned my back to the other dog. I skulked like this all day, even when Kaurii came home. I felt betrayed and confused and..and..My emotions were just so jumbled together that all I felt I could do was pout and fume. Then I heard Kaurii say his name...

Casanova.

And that's when I felt a strong uncertainty for tomorrow's events.
