[~Story]
No one ever tells you when or how you're suppose to die. It'd save people a lot of trouble. I mean, you'd know when to say your goodbyes instead of shouting meaningless arguments. And people wouldn't be so surprised and have absolutely nothing to say beyond the typical, "I'm so sorry for your loss". Then again, it's not like people wake up in the morning and say, "I think I'll die today." If they do... Well... They need help. Seriously.

I should back up a little. My name is Hikari Tsukino. My father was Japanese while my mother was Australian. We lived in a quaint little townhouse in the Upper East Side of Manhattan Island. Okay… Maybe not so little… I’m five feet six inches without shoes with blue eyes and blonde hair. And don’t you dare say my hair is white. It’s cornsilk. Golden. Pale blonde. Whatever.

And let me tell you, it’s not easy hiding your powers in the middle of a city. Especially in one whose population numbers eight million and rising. It only means that there are more eyes on you if you get exposed.

I always used a spell to conceal my ears and I never set things on fire, no matter how tempting it was. But please ignore the singed edges of the curtains. I swear I didn’t mean it when I lost my temper.

Anyway, this is how death happened to me. Or, at least, how I think it happened...
~*~
I’ve always loved the beach. It was a good place to train for track and an absolutely gorgeous view no matter what time it is. In fact, that’s where I met him. The summer I turned fifteen, I found the most beautiful man in the world, Zane. I loved him and he loved me. Only problem was, he was twenty-three. I know. Jailbait.

Beyond the age difference, there wasn’t anything I didn’t love about him. But what I loved the most was his voice. It was smooth and deep like fine wine. Especially when he would strum his guitar and sing. I never understood how someone who smoked would have such an amazing voice… He became the god of my life.

Walking in the City while holding hands with Zane, I would think, "I can’t believe I’m with such a wondrous person." He’d turn to face me and tell me the exact same thing. The two Christmases that we spent in front of the giant tree in Rockefeller Center and skating in Wollman’s Rink are always cherished in my heart.

During the winter, cuddling with Zane is the best. He got cold easily and would shiver like a cute puppy as he waited. It was the only time I would use fire to heat up my body to keep him warm.

Our love was symbolized by a matching pair of rings worn on our left pinkies. For the first Christmas, Zane led me away from the rink to a bench in Central Park. He slipped off my glove and slid the cool metal band onto my small finger. The small ruby in the center sparkled as he showed me his and told the myth he heard.

"One of my friends told me this once. Everyone is connected to another person by an invisible red string that is tied to little finger of his or her left hand. The two people connected by the red string to is said to be destined together. I believe that you are my Destiny."

It was our red string; the stone of passion on our fingers.
~*~
It was Valentine’s Day when I died. The irony absolutely kills me. Literally. We agreed to meet when he got off of work to go to Serendipity. I loved their frozen hot chocolate. But that’s a bit off topic.

I wore a white dress covered with a coat and matching boots that night. My mom and I got into another argument about me seeing him as I got ready, resulting in me being late. My breath clouded in front of me as I hurried to our usual meeting place. I could see him standing on the corner, playing with something in his hands, while I waited at the red light. I was so close…

The traffic signal finally changed and I began to cross the street. Half way across, I slipped on a patch of ice and heard the telltale sound of screeching tires as a speeding car made a precarious turn. My heart stopped and I froze. Zane looked up at the noise and saw me.

Pain. Zane. Hey, that rhymed…

It’s funny how you think of the most random things as you fly through the car, catapulted by the force of a two-ton mass moving at sixty-five miles per hour.

The small black box he was holding clattered to the ground as he ran to my side.

After that, it became hazy as the minutes blended together. I could see his frantic face telling me to stay awake. That help was coming. I don’t remember what I said but I reached up to stroke away the worry lines creasing his face. It only made him cry. I never saw him cry before.

He faded away from my vision and he never saw me again. I can still hear his voice telling me to open my eyes. To stay with him. To live.
~*~
I never got the engagement ring nestled inside the red velvet. It went into a safety deposit box and he walked away from it. I hope that one day, he can take it out again, even if it won't for me…

User ImageHer body felt so light! As if she could leap into the air and fly away. Hikari twirled in a circle, enjoying the feel of her skirt moving against her legs.

"You look ridiculous doing that," a deep voice commented.

The fair shinigami stumbled a little and peered at the person leaning on her doorway. She squinted as the world continued to spin around her.

"Since when did you have a twin?" she giggled.

The violet eyed shinigami silently arched an eyebrow at the silly girl. "We weren't brought back to amuse the uppers. Duty comes before indulgences."

Simply smiling brightly at Yue, Hikari asked, "then why were we brought back?"

Yue sighed and walking into the room "To save lives. To bring them to justice. Every step we take, death follows us. There's nothing happy about it."

The sixteen-year old tilted her head as she processed the information. "If that's true... then aren't we what people call angels?"

Half way across the room, Yue froze. He never saw his afterlife in such a way. It was a bit... refreshing...
