02.19.07Rei Comes Home Crystal carefully closed the door behind her, breathing in the familiar scent of apples and cinnamon; she was finally home. Locking the door, careful not to disturb the precious kitten in her arms, she slipped off her shoes and padded into the kitchen.
Her house was remarkably plain and simple. It was one of those white wall, white-carpet places with rustic furniture and adornments. Her sock clad feet whispered silently on the pristine tile, sliding next to the stained oak dining table and chairs. The kitchen was done in oak and marble, with an island in the middle and counters surrounding it. In the middle of the island was a huge bag of kitten food and brand new bowls. She hadn't felt it necessary to cage the kitten; she knew he'd be smart, and Rohan would mostly leave him alone. Mostly. Her parents had been okay with it; Crys had secretly decided she wouldn't cage Rei at all, regardless of if her parents had wanted to or not. It was a good thing her parents were as cool as they were.
Crystal's parents were rarely home, and when they were, it was barely enough time to pack a new set of clothes and be on their way. She didn't mind, really. They were off doing what they loved - humanitarian work - and the wrote her every day. She'd been afraid to ask about getting a cat since Rohan was such a ham, but to her surprise, her parents had encouraged it, especially since it was coming from Josh. Crys smiled to herself, remembering how they used to tease her and Josh about getting married. She had insisted she'd never marry someone with so many cooties. Ah, the good old days!
Making sure Rei was securely snuggled in the crook of her arm, Crys went about grabbing a pair of scissors and cutting open the bag of kitten chow. She was less graceful in pouring, though, and managed to cover half the counter in kibbles. The girl giggled to herself. Normally such a thing would have frustrated her, but she was still bubbling with excitement.
Deciding to clean it after she got Rei situated, she teetered over towards the photo-lined hallway and up the spiraling, white-railed stairs, using her foot to nudge open her bedroom door that proclaimed that absolutely no one was allowed under penalty of being eaten by a Gwee. Her room was fairly spacious, with a rustic dresser of weathered blue and a plain desk with a computer. Her plain bed alighted on a sleigh-like frame, close to the ground. Her sheets were blue - her favorite color - and her bed nicely made, with only a single lump under the covers to disrupt the flow.
"Rohan, you oaf," she scolded the Gwee under the covers, still smiling. Crys put the still sleeping kitten at the foot of her bed, placed the food on the ground by the bed and commenced digging Rohan out and shooing the disgruntled dragon outside. "I'll feed you extra treats, just be good and sleep downstairs for a minute!" The Gwee begrudgingly complied, floating downstairs in a sleepy trance. The girl skipped into her bathroom and poured a cup of water, coming back to fill the other bowl. She put both the food and water on a mat next to her dresser, before taking a pen and a clean piece of paper out of her top drawer, writing on it quickly but neatly.Crystal Feb. 19, 2007
Dear Mom and Dad,
I got Rei today! That's what I named him: Rei. It's Japanese for ghost, just like his father. He looks so much like Casper - that's Josh's cat and Rei's father - and I thought it'd be nice to name him after his father. Kind of like my middle name is Mom's middle name, right?
I'm going to take lots of pictures for you guys. He's so cute! He's got taweny tawniy tan fur and little ears and big paws and *lots of scribbling here* pretty blue eyes. Too bad kitties don't keep that color, isn't it? 'cause then he'd have blue eyes like me!
I hope all is going well with you guys. Miss you and love you. Rohan says Hi...when he's awake.

"And here's your food and water!" she exclaimed, walking back into her room and sitting on the bed. She put him down again, so that he could sniff and see. The kitten didn't seem too terribly interested, choosing instead to stare at his strange owner. Crys sighed, picking him up and placing him on her bed. "This is where I sleep. You can sleep here too, if you want." She smiled and stroked his soft fur, eyes straying to his stapled wound. Rei purred and head butted her hand, falling over in the process. There he lay, looking at her through squinted eyes and purring with his whole body.
"Welcome home, Rei-Rei," Crystal whispered, leaning down to nuzzle the kitten. "I hope you like it!"

03.14.07Adventures in Sushi Crystal bounded upstairs, the family Gwee - Rohan - perched on her shoulder. She used her foot to push open the door to her room, since her hands were wrapped around two boxes with chopsticks on top. "Rei, time for lunch," she called merrily as she used her elbow to close the door behind her.
The kitten was perched on the edge of Crystal's bed, swishing his tail expectantly. The girl had noticed that Rei seemed to grow, or at least mature, faster than a normal kitten. The first day she'd brought him home, he'd been receptive to her, and even though he couldn't have possibly understood her, he did. He was very responsive to her chatter and movements; she'd developed small games to keep him healthy and interested, and this game was one of his favorites.
The energetic girl jumped onto her bed, forcing Rohan to grunt a protest and take flight as she curled her legs beneath herself, placing the boxes between herself and the kitten. Rei was used to her jumpy movements and simply swayed on the bed as it lurched under her weight, waiting patiently. "This is a bento," she explained, popping the boxes open, revealing some yummy looking sushi, "it has fish! Cats like fish, right?" There were California rolls and dragon rolls and spider rolls, as well as a few onigiri and tempura. Rohan chirruped at Crystal, who rolled her eyes and smiled at the old Gwee. "Of course you get some, but this game is for Rei and I."
Rei sat at the ready, eyes squinted beneath his living patch. Crys cracked open one of the chopsticks, scooping up some tempura and dipping it in a thin, black sauce, taking a huge bite. "Mmm!" she exclaimed as she chewed, smiling. She took the small piece that was left and threw it up in the air. Without missing a beat, Rei leapt to meet the airbound piece of food, snagging it delicately in his mouth before landing on all fours. He started to pad back to the edge of the bed, when he suddenly stopped, dropped the piece of food, and looked back to his owner.
"Eeeeh?" Crystal's wide blue eyes held the animal in disbelief. "You don't want it? But it's shrimp..." She picked up the discarded piece of food; Rei didn't do so much as paw at her. "You really don't like it? You didn't even try it!" Rei licked his chops and mewled, signaling that he did, in fact, taste it. Crys sighed and tossed the food over her shoulder, which Rohan snapped out of the air delightedly.
"Okay, how about this?" She split open the onigiri to reveal smoked salmon. Gingerly using her fingers to take out a piece, she threw it towards Rei. The limber kitten snatched it out of the air, and dropped it almost as soon as he landed, looking at her yet again. Crystal scowled. "A cat that doesn't like fish? What's wrong with you?"
Rei sneezed indignantly. "I don't usually like fish either," she retorted to the kitten's annoyed gesture, "but sushi is good." The kitten just stared at her, lowering himself to the bed and crossing his front paws. "Oh fine!" she rolled her eyes, reaching over to her dresser. She opened the top drawer and pulled out a Baby Ruth bar, picking off a small piece and tossing it to the kitten. Rei leaped with a joyous gleam in his eye, snagging the peanut candy out of the air and barely chewing it before it disappeared.
"SLOW DOWN," Crystal cried at the animal. It wouldn't look good if she had to take Rei in to Dr. Shu for emergency peanut removal! "It's a treat, but if you choke on it I wont give you anymore!" The kitten cleaned his paw and whisker, seeming to ignore the girl. He apparently had no use for her if she couldn't feed him decent food.
Giving an exhasperated sigh, Crys finished most of the sushi, giving Rei's share to Rohan (much to his delight). "So you don't like fish," she stated as Rei gave her a sideways glance. "Do you even know what fish are?" Again with the sideways glance. "Well fine, I'll teach you!" Crystal snapped her fingers, grinning wickedly at the little kitten. "Next weekend, we're going to the aquarium!"
Unimpressed, Rei yawned and curled up at Crystal's feet. The girl leaned back on the headboard, already imagining how fun it was going to be to see Rei's reaction to the moving, breathing fish.

04.08.07Rei's First Easter A Letter From Crystal Dearest Mother and Father,
I hope you are doing well in whatever reaches of the world you are in! I hope this letter finds you well and whole when you return. Haha, tell dad he shouldn't walk outside barefoot in the Alps, and that it's really not ALL that surprising that he got frostbite from it! Just remember mom, YOU chose to marry him! Hahaha!
Rei is doing fine, thank you for asking. We had a great Easter. Rohan doesn't mind him so much since he accidently knocked over the ham I made and I had to give most of it to that Gwee. Rei is a bit of a clutz, it would seem, just like me. I hid some toys around the house for him to find, and wouldn't you know, he found all of them! I think Rohan helped him, little cheater! But Rei is very smart, I think one day he'll have to be watching over me! Can you imagine?
So, Rei got his little toys and Rohan got ham. Oh, I took Rei to the pet store a few days before while buying decorations, and he saw a bunny. He was scared of it! Nearly clawed my arms off trying to get away! He doesn't like fish and he was scared of a rabbit! What type of cat is he, anyway? I hope he grows out of it. I don't need a scaredy cat, hehe.
He's fully potty-trained now, and he trained ME when it's dinner time for him. Funny how animals do that. No more sleeping in late for me; he demands his dry food in the morning. I know I could leave it down over night, but I don't want him to get fat! I think I saw that thing on his head eat some of his food though...oh you'll see what I mean when you're home next. He's really quite adorable!
Well, he's eating my shoe right now so I suppose I should go. I'm going to take him to an aquarium sometime soon. Is that mean? Probably. Hahaha!

05.27.07May Flowers & Showers It had started out as a harmless, late May afternoon. Crystal was set to plant some flowers in the front yard, since the old ones had been severely neglected and died. The young girl very much enjoyed the colors of spring, and had decided to plant a few roses near the house, and some iris by the front gate. Eventually, she hoped to have all colors of the rainbow present, starting with her red roses and purple iris.
She let Rei out of the house when she did these things, for the yard was gated and the young creature didn't seem to have an itnerest in trying to escape. As Crystal started to pull out the dead flora, Rei sat on the brick planter in front of the house and watched, tilting his head in puzzlement. He flicked his ears in a lazy manner, his tail swishing as he started to feel playful. He couldn't help it, watching her yank out the strange dead things, which hand dangling 'roots' as she called them. She warned him not to touch the dead ones, as they still had throns that were brittle enough to stick him. Rei understood, but didn't really care in the way that children tended to.
As the human walked away from the freshly cleaned soil, Rei found himself staring into the holes. Why, that soil smelled divine! Is that why the flowers grew so large and pretty? Would it work with him? The kitten wiggled his little butt and dove into the soil, rolling in it delightedly. It felt cool against his fur, and the smell was quite agreeable!
"REI!" Crystal shrieked as she returned, quickly plucking the kitten out of the soil. "What in the-...ohmygosh, you reek!" She held the kitten out at arm's length. "Rei, there was fertilizer in there, and you just rolled in it. GROSS!" the girl groaned in disgust. "Now I have to give you a bath to clean it off! So much for planting today..."
Bath? Rei's ears flattened. He didn't like the sound of that, but judging by how the human was holding him, she was serious. She'd never held him away from her before, and it made him a little sad. He mewled a pitiful apology.
The girl sighed. "Aaw, Rei, I know you didn't mean to. You're not in trouble, you just...stink like a really full literbox. I can't let you in the house like this." She carried the dejected cat upstairs to her private bathroom, where she started to fill the sink with warm water. She then closed the door and put the kitten down, so that he could not escape. Crystal moved to the bath and started that water to run as well.
She had told him what a bath was, once upon a time. He didn't understand what the water was other than something to drink, and he wasn't very keen on the idea of being put under the stuff. Crystal was suddenly picking him up again, putting him towards the now full sink.
"Don't flail," she grumbled, "or this'll be more difficult than it needs to be!"
The kitten tucked his tail, lifting his feet in surprise as they contacted the warm water. That was WET! He mewled a single frightened protest as the lower half of his body was wrapped in the unpleasantly damp water.
"It's okay sweetie," Crystal cooed as she brushed the bulk of the filth off, "I'm cleaning you off here, and I'll give you a nice scrub in the bath. Think of it as being brushed! You like that, don't you?"
Rei was mostly still as the woman went about her work, not really disliking the sensation but not entirely certain about it, either. She lifted him, soaking wet and...why was it so COLD outside of the water?! He was almost relieved when she put him into the tub, which was low enough in water that he could sit and still have his head and shoulders above the water. As the sink drained, the kitten decided it wasn't so bad, this bath business...
Crystal used a wash rag to gently scrub the kitten, her fingers curled underneath the fabric, pressing against the little one's fur like a mother cat's tongue. Rei started to purr, a little reluctantly, but more earnestly as she cleaned his face. It almost felt as good as rolling in that fur-till-eye-zar stuff. Maybe more!
And so, Rei suffered his bath with good humor, baffling Crystal yet again on just how strange he was. She made a mental note to talk to Josh later, to see if Casper had been the same way, or if hers was just...special.

07.13.07Friday the Thirteenth So mom and dad got me a journal. It's made out of some fancy wood or paper or something but I'd rather play tennis than figure it out!
We had a Friday the 13th today. I am not supersitu supersticious, but I think maybe Rei is. I was watching one of those horror movies (they don't play much else on days like these, how stupid) and Rei was REALLY into it! He was staring and his eyes were wide and everything! He was kinda freaking me out so I went to pet him to comfort him and he about leapt straight into the air! He shot off the bed and crawled to the top of my curtains and he wouldn't come down, not even when I tried to bribe him with candy!
So I guess Rei is something of a scaredy cat, hahaha! When I went to bed he got under the covers with me and wouldn't leave my side. I don't like horror movies either so maybe he was trying to make me feel better too. He's so smart...I wonder how Casper and Phfhin are doing. I need to call Josh.
Rei doesn't like fish, likes baths and is a scaredy cat of B rate movies. I wonder what tomorrow will bring with him...
